Victor Herbert, the Harvard nutrition scientist, was quoted by Time magazine in a famous 1992 cover story about nutrition as saying that vitamins just gave one “expensive urine.” Why?

In vitro (Latin for “within the glass” or lab) vitamin and minerals’ tests suggest that they are fantastic when you ingest them. But, in vivo (“within the living”) is a different story. Why? Bioavailability. They are broken down in the gut and eliminated – never available.
